Five years after Forza Horizon 5, Playground Games returns with the sixth installment in the series. Forza Horizon 6 launches on May 19, 2026, and for the first time in Horizon’s history brings the festival to Japan. This isn’t just a change of scenery: the developers are preparing the largest and most detailed open world in the series’ history.

Here’s what the game offers, which edition to pick, and why this entry might be the most important one for the franchise since Forza Horizon 4.

Release Date and Platforms

The game has two release dates depending on the edition:

  • May 15, 2026 — early access for Premium Edition owners (4 days earlier).
  • May 19, 2026 — full release for Standard and Deluxe editions.

The game launches simultaneously on Xbox Series X|S and PC (Microsoft Store and Steam). The PlayStation 5 version arrives later in 2026 — Xbox hasn’t confirmed an exact date, but you can add the game to your Wishlist on the PlayStation Store.

From day one, Forza Horizon 6 is available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass — historically the most cost-effective way to play a new Horizon at launch.

Japan as the Main Stage

The setting is the headline feature of the sixth installment. Forza Horizon 6 takes place in a stylized version of Japan that blends mega-city sprawl with wild nature. The Playground Games team traveled to Japan for reference together with cultural consultant Kyoko Yamashita to capture not just the look but the feel of the country.

The map is divided into districts with their own identity:

  • Tokyo City — the densest urban space in Horizon history. Five times larger than Guanajuato from Forza Horizon 5.
  • Shibuya, Ginkgo Avenue, Tokyo Tower — iconic city landmarks.
  • The C1 Loop — the legendary high-speed route at the heart of Tokyo.
  • Mt. Haruna and Bandai Azuma — for touge battle enthusiasts.
  • Docks and industrial zones — for grittier driving.
  • The Japanese Alps with a ski resort — snowy locations year-round regardless of the season.

In total, the map features over 670 roads — the most varied and largest open world in the series.

Over 550 Cars and the Cover Stars

At launch, players have access to over 550 real-world cars — from classic JDM machines to modern hypercars. The headliners:

  • 2025 GR GT Prototype — the lead cover car from Toyota Gazoo Racing, making its debut in Forza Horizon 6.
  • 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser — the second cover car.
  • Ferrari J50 — exclusive pre-order bonus across all editions.

Separately, there are Forza Edition cars — vehicles with extreme modifications hidden across the open world — and rare Aftermarket Cars.

New Modes and Mechanics

Forza Horizon 6 doesn’t stop at a new location. Here are the key changes:

Wristband Progression

You start not as a rookie racer but as a tourist. To join the festival, you first need to complete the Horizon Qualifiers, then unlock new wristbands that grant access to events and territories. The endgame goal — the gold wristband and access to Legend Island.

Touge Battles

Nighttime races down Japanese mountain passes — a direct nod to the country’s iconic street racing scene.

Horizon Rush

New obstacle-course-style events in spectacular locations like the Tokyo Docks.

Drag Meets and Time Attack Circuits

12-player open-world races with synchronized starts and in-world leaderboards — no menus, no matchmaking.

The Estate

A customizable mountainside property in rural Japan you can decorate to taste — your builds become part of the world and other players can visit them.

Customizable Garages

Personal showroom-style garages in your homes where you can invite other players. Garage designs can be shared with the community.

CoLab (the New EventLab)

EventLab is now multiplayer — up to 12 players can build tracks together, anywhere on the map.

The Eliminator and Hide & Seek

The battle royale mode returns, joined by a new Hide & Seek mode.

Spec Racing Championships

New series with fixed car classes for balanced racing.

Under the Hood

Forza Horizon 6 — ray tracing on the PC version
The PC version supports ray tracing for global illumination and reflections

Forza Horizon 6 is the first installment in the series developed exclusively for ninth-generation consoles (Xbox Series X|S). According to Playground Games, leaving Xbox One behind unlocked «significantly more potential» for post-launch content.

The PC version gets ray-traced global illumination and ray-traced reflections. Consoles stick with screen-space reflections but receive a new refraction shader for headlights and taillights — adding realistic light depth with a rainbow effect on polycarbonate-style headlights.

The engine is the in-house ForzaTech.

Editions and What’s Inside

Three editions are available, plus a separate limited-edition peripheral set:

Edition What you get
Standard Base game, releases May 19, 2026
Deluxe Base game + Car Pass (30 cars, one per week post-launch)
Premium Everything in Deluxe + early access from May 15, 2026 + future DLC expansions

All editions include the Ferrari J50 as a pre-order bonus.

The limited-edition Xbox Wireless Controller and Wireless Headset in signature Horizon Festival colors (transparent cyan, volt green, and hot pink) — announced April 20, 2026, on sale from May 19, 2026.

Game Pass: The Shortest Path to Japan

Forza Horizon 6 is on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from day one. At the current Ultimate subscription price, this is the cheapest way to access the game at launch — especially if you haven’t decided whether to commit to the full Standard Edition price tag.

Verdict: What to Watch For

Forza Horizon 6 looks like the series’ ambitious bid to return to the top after five years of Forza Horizon 5. Japan is the most long-requested setting from fans, Tokyo is five times denser than previous series cities, and social features like CoLab and seamless Car Meets suggest Playground is betting on community as much as the single-player campaign.

If you’re a fan of JDM, open worlds, or have been looking for an excuse to pick up Xbox Game Pass, May 19, 2026 (or May 15 with Premium Edition) is one of the biggest gaming dates of the year.
